Full Job Description

đź“‹ Description

  • • As a Staff Software Engineer on Reddit’s Community Builders team, you will shape the technical strategy for growth systems that help new communities find audiences and sustain engagement across feeds, search, and onboarding surfaces.
  • • You will partner with engineering managers to cultivate a growth engineering mindset, balancing velocity with reliability while advocating for experimentation, learning, and rigorous measurement.
  • • You will collaborate with Relevance, Feeds, Search, and other platform teams to ensure technical alignment and influence roadmaps, acting as the bridge between Community Builders and ML-powered systems that surface communities to users.
  • • You will establish instrumentation and experimentation foundations to translate data from activation funnels and retention curves into architectural decisions, using metrics to prioritize high-impact bets.
  • • You will serve as the engineering voice in cross-functional partnerships with Product, Design, Data Science, and Consumer platform teams, aligning stakeholders on technical feasibility and co-authoring roadmaps that bridge user experience with backend realities.
  • • You will raise the bar on engineering excellence by leading design reviews, establishing scalable and maintainable patterns, and ensuring that speed never compromises system health or accrues unmanageable tech debt.
  • • You will mentor engineers, help the team navigate ambiguity with confidence, and communicate complex technical trade-offs clearly to peers and executives alike.
  • • You will leverage your experience in ranking, recommendations, and personalization to design backend architectures, retrieval systems, and inference pipelines that scale ML-powered features like Two-Tower models.

🎯 Requirements

  • • At least 7 years of experience steering cross-team projects that solve tangible business problems, not just hitting ship dates.
  • • Proven experience with ranking, recommendations, and personalization, including designing backend architectures, retrieval systems, and inference pipelines for ML-heavy products.
  • • Ability to partner effectively with Machine Learning engineers to turn model outputs (e.g., Two-Tower models) into high-impact product features.
  • • Strong systems thinking: you see how code, product, and team dynamics influence each other and can plan long-term while resolving immediate blockers.
  • • Demonstrated mentorship skills: you energize teams by building culture and craft, not just assigning tasks.
  • • Comfortable with growth-team ambiguity: you navigate uncertainty with confidence, prototype fast, and pivot based on data without losing team focus.
