  • • Vultr is at the forefront of revolutionizing cloud infrastructure, making high-performance solutions accessible, affordable, and locally available to enterprises and AI innovators worldwide. With an expansive network of 32 global data centers, Vultr has earned the trust of hundreds of thousands of active customers across 185 countries, providing robust Cloud Compute, Cloud GPU, Bare Metal, and Cloud Storage services. Our commitment to growth and innovation is underscored by a significant equity financing round in December 2024, valuing the company at $3.5 billion. Founded by David Aninowsky and sustained through self-funding for over a decade, Vultr stands as the world's largest privately-held cloud infrastructure company.
  • • As a Storage Performance Engineer at Vultr, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring and enhancing the optimal storage performance across our entire ecosystem. This highly visible position within our rapidly expanding technology company demands a deep understanding of performance tuning and benchmarking methodologies, specifically applied to both storage systems and the compute/GPU environments that interact with them. You will be instrumental in driving the best possible storage performance, not only within our Vultr Cloud Storage products but also for the systems that consume this critical infrastructure.
  • • Your primary responsibility will be to meticulously improve the performance of Vultr's high-performance, cloud-based storage offerings, always with a customer-centric perspective. This involves conducting comprehensive benchmarking and in-depth analysis of storage performance across various configurations, particularly focusing on the interplay between our storage products and our GPU and Compute offerings. You will analyze the results of these benchmarks and provide actionable recommendations for performance tuning to achieve significant improvements.
  • • A key aspect of this role involves the continuous enhancement of our Ceph-based Cloud Storage System. You will contribute to its stability, scalability, functionality, performance, and cost-effectiveness. This includes actively participating in the design and architecture decisions for our Ceph-based Cloud Storage, ensuring it remains at the cutting edge of distributed storage technology.
  • • Developing and refining automation frameworks for our Ceph-based Cloud Storage infrastructure will be a significant part of your contribution. This includes optimizing existing metrics collection and alerting systems to ensure proactive monitoring and rapid issue resolution. Furthermore, you will play a crucial role in contributing to our internal documentation and knowledge base, sharing your expertise and insights with the wider engineering team.
  • • This role requires extensive experience with the Linux kernel, particularly in optimizing the networking stack and storage protocol performance on the client side. You will also be involved in the design and performance analysis of storage system architectures, with a strong emphasis on Ceph. This is a unique opportunity to join a fast-growing team and make a lasting impact on Vultr and the future of cloud infrastructure.
  • • Key responsibilities include:
  • • Driving improvements in Vultr's cloud storage performance from a customer-centric viewpoint.
  • • Performing rigorous benchmarking and analysis of storage performance across diverse product combinations, including storage, GPU, and compute.
  • • Analyzing benchmark results and recommending specific tuning strategies to enhance storage performance.
  • • Continuously improving the stability, scalability, functionality, performance, and cost-efficiency of the Ceph-based Cloud Storage System.
  • • Actively contributing to the design and architectural decisions for Ceph-based Cloud Storage.
  • • Developing and enhancing automation frameworks for the Ceph-based Cloud Storage infrastructure.
  • • Optimizing existing metrics collection and alerting systems for proactive monitoring.
  • • Contributing to internal documentation and knowledge base development.
  • • This is your chance to join our dynamic and rapidly expanding team, leaving your indelible mark on Vultr and shaping the future of cloud infrastructure. If you are passionate about performance optimization and distributed systems, we encourage you to apply.

🎯 Requirements

  • • In-depth experience with performance tuning of Ceph and Ceph clients, as well as other scale-out distributed storage systems and their clients.
  • • Proven experience in tuning the performance of Linux networking, NFS & iSCSI clients, and storage clients of proprietary solutions.
  • • Fluent proficiency with Linux operating systems (CentOS, RHEL, Debian, Ubuntu).
  • • Hands-on experience with virtualized platforms and clients (KVM, virtio-blk, virtio-fs).
  • • Hands-on experience with Kubernetes (RKE2 or similar).
  • • 6+ years of extensive experience configuring, deploying, and managing distributed systems.
  • • Effective communication skills, excellent time management, and the ability to work independently.
