- • Lead and oversee the Agency Underwriting Department, ensuring consistent adherence to service level agreements (SLAs) for conventional, FHA, VA, and USDA loan products.
- • Underwrite complex conventional and government-backed mortgage loans, including FHA, VA, and USDA loans, in full compliance with federal agency guidelines and regulatory requirements.
- • Provide second-level underwriting reviews and resolutions for escalated loan cases, addressing high-risk or non-standard scenarios that require expert judgment.
- • Serve as the primary point of contact for branch teams, delivering clear guidance on underwriting escalations, policy interpretations, and compliance concerns via phone and email.
- • Monitor and analyze the underwriting pipeline to maintain productivity, identify bottlenecks, and ensure timely loan processing consistent with established SLAs.
- • Manage and report on underwriter bonus structures, tracking performance metrics and ensuring accurate compensation alignment.
- • Mentor, coach, and develop underwriting staff under supervision of senior management, fostering skill enhancement and performance improvement across the team.
- • Collaborate with operations and sales teams to uphold high customer service standards and resolve systemic underwriting issues impacting branch efficiency.
- • Prepare and distribute departmental reports on underwriting volume, compliance, turnaround times, and key performance indicators to senior leadership.
- • Participate in special projects as directed by the Chief Operating Officer, including process improvements, policy updates, training initiatives, and compliance audits.
- • Apply extensive knowledge of ATR/QM requirements and federal lending disclosures to ensure all underwriting decisions meet regulatory standards.
- • Maintain accurate documentation and audit trails for all underwriting actions, ensuring alignment with internal controls and external regulatory expectations.
- • Utilize problem-solving skills and deep experience with agency guidelines to resolve ambiguous or conflicting loan scenarios efficiently and compliantly.
- • Ensure all underwriting activities align with company policies, industry best practices, and federal agency mandates, including HUD and VA Direct Endorsement standards.
- • Work closely with technology and operations teams to optimize underwriting workflows and system utilization, including proficiency in Encompass LOS where applicable.
- • Communicate changes in underwriting guidelines, regulatory updates, or internal policy adjustments clearly to stakeholders across multiple departments.
- • Promote a culture of accountability, transparency, and continuous improvement within the underwriting team and across cross-functional groups.
- • Perform other duties as assigned by senior management to support organizational goals and operational excellence.
🎯 Requirements
- • 5+ years’ mortgage underwriting experience with FHA, VA, USDA, and conventional loan guidelines
- • 3+ years’ underwriting management experience
- • Direct Endorsement (HUD) and/or SAR authority (VA) status, with USDA experience preferred
- • Extensive knowledge of FHA, VA, and conventional loan underwriting standards
- • Working knowledge of ATR/QM requirements and mortgage compliance disclosures
- • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook; Encompass LOS experience preferred
