- • Own the technical vision and execution for Viator’s core marketplace platform, serving 300,000+ bookable travel experiences and millions of global travelers every month. You will lead a distributed, cross-functional engineering team (backend, frontend, mobile, data) in building scalable systems that power search, booking, payments, supplier integrations, and traveler communications.
- • Drive the architectural evolution of a high-traffic, cloud-native platform running on AWS/Kubernetes. You will make critical decisions on micro-service boundaries, event-driven architectures, data pipelines, and performance optimization to ensure sub-second page loads and 99.9 % uptime during peak travel seasons.
- • Partner directly with Product, Design, Data Science, and Operations to translate ambitious product roadmaps into technical deliverables. You will balance short-term feature velocity with long-term technical health, ensuring every release moves the needle on conversion, supplier onboarding speed, and traveler satisfaction.
- • Champion engineering excellence through code reviews, automated testing (unit, integration, contract, e2e), CI/CD best practices, and observability. You will establish SLIs/SLOs, lead blameless post-mortems, and foster a culture where quality is everyone’s responsibility.
- • Mentor and grow a world-class engineering team across multiple time zones. You will conduct 1:1s, craft individual development plans, run architecture guilds, and create clear progression frameworks so every engineer knows how to level up and make an outsized impact.
- • Own the full delivery lifecycle—from requirements gathering and technical design through deployment, monitoring, and iterative improvement. You will run agile rituals (stand-ups, sprint planning, retros), manage risk, and communicate status transparently to stakeholders ranging from engineers to C-level executives.
- • Optimize for global scale and localization. You will ensure our systems gracefully handle traffic spikes when destinations reopen, currencies fluctuate, or languages need to be added overnight, all while maintaining PCI-DSS compliance and GDPR/CCPA privacy standards.
- • Collaborate with Viator’s Trust & Safety and Customer Support teams to build tooling that detects fraudulent bookings, surfaces real-time alerts, and empowers agents to resolve traveler issues in minutes, not days.
- • Experiment relentlessly. You will set up robust A/B and multivariate testing frameworks so we can rapidly validate new features like dynamic pricing, AI-powered recommendations, or real-time inventory sync without compromising stability.
- • Contribute to open-source and the broader tech community. Whether it’s publishing blog posts on high-scale Node.js patterns, speaking at meetups about event sourcing, or releasing internal libraries, you will help position Viator as a thought leader in travel technology.
- • Stay close to the traveler and supplier experience. You will regularly review user feedback, shadow support calls, and even book experiences yourself to ensure the technology you build translates into unforgettable memories.
🎯 Requirements
- • 7+ years of software engineering experience with at least 3 years leading distributed teams in a cloud-native, microservices environment.
- • Expert-level proficiency in at least one modern backend language (Java, Kotlin, Node.js, Go) and solid exposure to React or React Native on the frontend.
- • Demonstrated success delivering high-availability systems handling 1,000+ requests per second and terabyte-scale data pipelines.
- • Strong product sense and ability to translate business goals into technical strategy; experience working directly with Product Managers and UX Designers.
- • Nice-to-have: hands-on experience with travel industry standards (GDS, OTA, PCI-DSS), event-driven architectures (Kafka, SNS/SQS), and machine-learning-driven personalization.
