  • • As a Truss Designer at Carter Lumber, you will play a pivotal role in translating architectural visions into tangible, high-quality roof and floor truss systems. This position is crucial to our manufacturing process, ensuring that the structural integrity and precision of our products meet the exacting standards of the construction industry and our valued clientele.
  • • Your primary responsibility will be the meticulous design and creation of production plans for roof and floor trusses. This involves a deep understanding of structural engineering principles and the ability to interpret complex blueprints and architectural drawings provided by our customers.
  • • You will be tasked with producing accurate and timely drawings that serve as the foundation for our fabrication and assembly teams, directly impacting the efficiency and success of our manufacturing operations.
  • • A strong grasp of commonly used concepts and practices within the construction industry is essential. This includes familiarity with building codes, material properties, and standard construction methodologies to ensure your designs are not only functional but also compliant and safe.
  • • You will leverage your expertise to evaluate designs, ensuring they adhere to established design standards and best practices. This involves a critical review process to identify and rectify any potential issues before production begins.
  • • A significant part of your role will involve analyzing and troubleshooting. You will meticulously review and analyze specifications, blueprints, engineered drawings, and related design documents to identify factors that could affect the design of wall, truss, and engineered wood components.
  • • This analytical process requires a keen eye for detail and the ability to anticipate potential challenges, proactively finding solutions to ensure seamless integration and performance of the designed components.
  • • You will serve as a key support resource, fostering clear and effective communication with production teams, customers, and Store Managers. This collaborative approach is vital to ensure that designs are accurate and understood throughout the entire project lifecycle.
  • • Your support extends to assisting our stores in effectively responding to customer questions and concerns, acting as a subject matter expert on truss design and application.

  • • You will utilize your proficiency in basic mathematics, geometry, and trigonometry to perform complex calculations necessary for structural design and load analysis.
  • • The ability to read and interpret architectural and structural plans is a fundamental requirement, enabling you to translate two-dimensional drawings into three-dimensional structural solutions.
  • • Problem-solving is at the core of this position. You will need to demonstrate a strong ability to analyze situations, troubleshoot design challenges, and develop effective, practical solutions.
  • • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are necessary to articulate design concepts, discuss technical details with stakeholders, and document your work comprehensively.
  • • A working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, including Word for documentation, Excel for data analysis and calculations, and Outlook for professional communication, is expected.
  • • This role offers flexibility, with the possibility of working onsite at our Johnsonville, SC location or operating fully remotely, providing an opportunity to integrate work into your preferred lifestyle.
  • • A strong belief in the mission and goals of Carter Lumber is necessary, as you will be an integral part of a team dedicated to providing quality building materials and solutions.
  • • We encourage individuals with a passion for construction and design to apply, as this role offers a chance to contribute significantly to the built environment.
  • • Your designs will directly impact the successful completion of countless construction projects, making this a rewarding and impactful career.
  • • You will be at the forefront of utilizing design software to create efficient and cost-effective truss solutions.
  • • Continuous learning and adaptation to new design software and industry trends will be encouraged and supported.
  • • This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a detail-oriented environment and enjoys the challenge of solving complex structural puzzles.
  • • You will be a critical link between the design phase and the physical construction, ensuring that what is envisioned on paper becomes a reality in the field.
  • • The opportunity to work with a diverse range of projects, from residential homes to commercial structures, will provide continuous professional growth and development.
  • • Your contributions will be recognized and valued within a company that is committed to excellence and customer satisfaction.
  • • We are looking for individuals who are not only technically proficient but also possess a strong work ethic and a commitment to delivering exceptional results.
